Learn online how to handle, prepare, and serve food safely and how to protect your rights in the workplace

The Just.Safe.Food training program is an online food handling course that educates participants on safe food preparation and handling techniques, intended for anyone working in food preparation, storage and service.

Take the course on your own time!

Based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Code and general best practices for health and safety at the workplace, the FWST is a program  that educates prospective and returning food handlers on food safety and workers’ rights. There are no prerequisites that you need to have to take this course.

Intended Course Outcomes

Sections 1 – 4

Foundational Knowledge

  • Identify the importance and the relationship between food and worker safety
  • Define common symptoms and sources of foodborne illness
  • List strategies to maintain personal hygiene in the workplace
  • Demonstrate an ability to handle potentially hazardous foods (PHFs)

Sections 5 – 8

Techniques to Promote Food and Worker Safety

 
  • Demonstrate how to use chemicals to clean dishes and surfaces and to prevent cross contamination and environmental hazards
  • Demonstrate how to properly store, prepare and cook food at the right temperatures to protect yourself and  your co-workers and customers

Sections 9 – 11

Additional Workplace Safety Tips

  • Identify methods of preventing food contamination in all stages of food handling, including procedures for cleaning and sanitizing equipment and appropriate work attire 
  • Demonstrate what to do in case of a workplace emergency

Sections 12 – 15

Workers’ Rights and Legal Assistance

Master how to identify and document cases of workers’ rights violations, where to seek legal help and how to file a complaint with the appropriate state agencies

Participant Information

Requirements for Training Completion

  • Complete all sections of the training program (~1.5 Hours)
  • Earn a score of at least 70%, or 21/30 questions, on the exam at the end of the course
  • Training is  valid for 3 years from the date of completion

Inferences on Certificate Holders
Certificate Holders can be inferred to (i) intend to become “food handlers,” as defined by SB303, (ii) have completed all sections of the training modules in the FWST, (iii) have passed, or achieved at least 70% on, the certification test at the conclusion of the course, (iv) obtained a food handler card, valid for 3 years from date of completion.
Privacy and Information Disclosure Statement
All information shared by participants shall remain confidential between the participant and the Food Handling Co-Op unless otherwise indicated. If desired, participants may voluntarily disclose their information to outside parties via opt-in surveys to (1) become a worker-owner and/or (2) stay connected with local organizers and worker advocacy.
Special Requirements for Participation
Participants will need basic computer skills and computer access to interact with the video interface used for training and certification.
Fees
$10, which includes 3 attempts for the certification exam. Individuals are allowed to review the training material as many times as needed before attempting to retake the exam.
Deadlines
Participants may complete the certification at any time after purchase Participants are responsible for completing the certification, including its renewal, by the legally prescribed deadline at their own discretion. Per SB303, “a food handler hired after June 1, 2011, is required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of his or her date of hire. A food handler must maintain a valid food handler card for the duration of his or her employment as a food handler.”

Qualifications of Instructional Personnel

Training will be standardized to cover all  the outlined content digitally through training videos that follow and are verified by both ANSI and FDA standards on food safety training.
